Stories From The Studio-

A conversation with Artist Jacquie Goldsmith

Jacquie Goldsmith is a mixed media artist whose practice is rooted in a profound and unapologetic commitment to authenticity. Working from her studio gallery in Taupo, Jacquie creates work that resists replication- each piece a singular encounter between maker, material and moment. Her art does not simply occupy space: it commands presence, inviting those who encounter it to slow down, look closer and feel something they may not have expected.

“ Creating for me is an act of self-caretaking. I lean into an intuitive process-responding to materials as they respond to me”.

MATERIALS & PROCESS

What materials do you work with, and how would you describe your making process?

I have an unapologetic approach to making art- for me, creating is an act of self-caretaking. I work with a range of materials, but UKU clay that I find most grounding. I am drawn to the slow, tactile process of hand building, working with clay slabs and coils. I am currently exploring the ancient japanese technique of Kurunuki - carving from a solid block of clay - which for me has become a meditative exploration of subtractive sculpture, resulting in one of a kind pieces.

My ceramics are often multi-fired. I consistently lean into an intuitive process, responding to materials as they respond to me- mark-making and layering in conversation with the medium. When everything is aligned I am often rewarded with a gem. The finished works are expressive, richly nuanced and highly textured. I aim for honesty in the work- powered through raw emotion, to spark a sensory response.

“My work is an authentic expression of a moment that can never be replicated”.

What advice would you give someone considering purchasing one of your works?

I believe art is about connection. Find something that moves you and resonates with you- that piece will last a lifetime. My work is an authentic expression of a moment that can never be replicated. When you choose a piece, you are choosing work that speaks and connects, intended for you to respond to for years to come. If a piece steals your heart but there is something standing in your way of your purchase, let’s talk and see if we can make it happen for you.

Before you take a piece home

A few things people often ask before taking a piece home or during their studio visit. If you have any further questions please feel free to connect. Warmest Regards Jacquie

  • My works generally range from NZD $120 to NZD $2500. This reflects the quality of materials used, the intensive making and firing process and the specialised skill set I have refined over many years. As each piece is unique, pricing is also determined by the complexity and scale of the individual work. When you purchase one of my pieces, you are not simply buying an object- you are acquiring a bespoke original, crafted with integrity, care and years of experience.

  • All of my pieces are one of a kind originals. I prefer to focus on the intentional, bespoke process of creating something completely unique- and for that reason, I have chosen not to produce reproductions of my work.

  • Currently, I don't offer an online store — however, I do sell directly to collectors. If there is a piece that resonates with you, please email me with the title of the work so I can confirm its availability.

From there, we can discuss the piece further and arrange purchase and delivery to your location.

  • I would be delighted to welcome you to my studio in Taupo. The studio gallery is open most long weekends, please check calendar dates as advertised. Or we can arrange a private viewing by appointment. To ensure I am there to greet you, please phone or email me in advance to make arrangements. For any pieces that speak to you during your visit, I accept cash or direct bank transfer.

  • I am happy to ship work both within New Zealand and internationally. Shipping is arranged at the purchaser's expense, along with any applicable import duties or local taxes. While I take every possible precaution to package these bespoke pieces with care, it is important for collectors to understand that shipping carries an inherent risk. As each work is a one-of-a-kind original, a lost or damaged piece cannot be replaced. I strongly recommend purchasing transit insurance for peace of mind.
